What is a gold-plated earring?

Fine gold plating is a technical process that deposits a thin layer of gold on silver, brass or another metal. For a piece of jewelry to qualify as "fine gold-plated", the thickness of the gold layer must be between 0.1 and 3 microns, 1 micron being equivalent to one thousandth of a millimeter. What's more, the gold used for plating must be of the highest possible purity, 24 carats (24 K). Note that this gold is the same as that found on vermeil jewelry, which corresponds to 925 silver coated with a 1 micron layer of 24 K gold.

The gold used to decorate gold-plated earrings is generally of a lower purity, between 14 and 18 K. Nevertheless, the greater quantity of gold present on these jewels makes them more expensive.
